Airpeace aircraft looses nose gear upon landing in Lagos airport Nigeria.

An Airpeace flight a Boeing 737 aircraft from Porthacourt (PHC) today 23rd July, 2019, lost the nose gear upon landing at Lagos Airport Runway 18R in Nigeria's commercial capital and busiest airport.

According to eyewitness account @ariellafitness, the aircraft was scheduled to land at runway 18L but because of the inclement weather and the poor visibility at that time, the Captain announced She was going to land on Rwy 18R which had better airfield approach lights as against runway 18L.

The professionalism of the Pilot in command ensuring minimal damage to the aircraft with no injuries on board is quiet commendable. Usually, such incident have high potential of a catastrophic outcome if not properly handled.

Just recently, on the 22nd of June, 2019 another of Airpeace aircraft a Boeing 737 from Abuja (ABV) with 87 Passengers and 6 crews skidded off the runway upon landing in heavy rains in Portharcourt (PHC) airport and came to a rest in soft mud.

As at the time of publishing this report, no official communication in respect of this incident from the airline. We also await the preliminary report from the Accident investigation Bureau (AIB) in Nigeria.

Consequently, Lagos Airport has announced in a Notam and also on their social media handle a total closure of runway 18R/36L till tomorrow Wednesday 24th, 2019. It is not clear however the exact time the runway will be opened.

With the closure of runway 18R/36L, which is primarily used for international flights, coupled with the poor airfield lights of runway 18L/36R, it will be interesting to see how the situation will be managed. One thing will be certain, passengers should expect delays and probably cancellation of flights due to the expected congestion that will suffice with the use of just a single runway in a busy airport like Lagos (LOS) catering for both local and international flights.
